Carol Dweck's "Mindset" talks about the human mindset, the way we think, learn and act, and how that can be changed from "fixed" to "growth". Fixed mindset goes to people that praise their ability over their effort. They think that putting effort into something diminishes your talent or ability, and that if your bad at something you should avoid it. Growth mindset on the other hand, praises effort over ability, no skill is unlearnable if the right work, dedication and effort is put into practice. This not only goes to education but to many aspects of our life. One of the quotes that really stuck to me was "Praising children's intelligence harms their motivation and it harms their performance". Although I can't say that I was constantly being praised by my parents, I do remember that all the way through elementary and middle school I got really good grades. I was praised for being intelligent, and I didn't put that much effort into class. I did the homework but I didn't go the extra mile in long hours of studying like some of my classmates. When I reached high school I realized that being "intelligent" wasn't going to be enough. I started struggling in many classes, especially once like math that need constant practice in order to understand. I blamed the teacher, I blamed the system, I said "math just isn't my thing". I was thinking "I'm intelligent, I dont need to put that much effort". The truth was that intelligence is nothing without effort and blaming others isn't going to bring results, the only way to really to excel in life is not only to have a goal but to give it your all to reach that goal.
